What Makes Galapagos' Nature so Remarkable?
The Galapagos Islands, which have been inhabited by man for barely 150 years, are among the most pristine natural places on Earth. Their beauty is inspirational: rich blue seas, gorgeous beaches, green highlands and magnificent underwater seascapes are the norm in the Enchanted Islands.
The Galapagos Islands represent a diverse ecosystem: the majestic mountains and scenic bays are fun to look at, climb and explore, but they are not necessarily appreciated as a habitat for the creatures that live there.
The Galapagos Marine Reserve is the 2nd largest Marine Reserve in the World, and home to all kinds of endemic and native Galapagos Wildlife. In addition, the Galapagos are special because of the ongoing, dedicated work of hundreds of scientists, researchers, local people, foreigners and park rangers, who are trying "with some success" to reverse the damage done by introduced species. Finally, the Galapagos Islands have a very privileged place in Natural History, as the inspiration for Charles Darwin's groundbreaking 1859 Origin of Species.
